Redeemed
Redeem means “to buy out.” Mankind’s freedom from the bondage of sin was purchased by Jesus’s death on the cross. Through faith in Christ, a person is no longer in bondage to sin but has been “bought out.” Why did mankind need to be redeemed? As stated in Romans 3:23, “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Through Jesus’s redemption, believers are freed from guilt and are “justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:24, ESV). This was necessary because mankind does not measure up to God’s glory but instead falls short of it.
Redemption provides the believer with many benefits, including eternal life (John 3:16), forgiveness of sins (Ephesians 1:7), righteousness (Romans 5:17), freedom from the law’s curse (Galatians 3:13), adoption into God’s family (Galatians 4:5), deliverance from sin’s bondage (Titus 2:14; 1 Peter 1:14–18), peace with God (Colossians 1:18–20), and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
An illustration of redemption can be seen in God’s deliverance of the children of Israel from Egypt. For many years, the Israelites lived in bondage under Pharaoh and could not free themselves. God saw their suffering, heard their cries, and acted to deliver them. On the night of the Passover, each Israelite household was instructed to sacrifice a lamb and place its blood on the doorposts of the house. When God saw the blood, judgment passed over that household (Exodus 12:1–13). Shortly afterward, the Israelites were released from their bondage and began their journey to freedom.
Their deliverance provides a picture of what Jesus Christ has done for us. Just as Israel was in bondage and needed God to deliver them, mankind is in bondage to sin and cannot redeem itself. Jesus became the sacrifice necessary for our redemption. John the Baptist declared, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29, ESV). Through His death on the cross and the shedding of His blood, Jesus paid the price for our redemption. We did not purchase our own freedom; Jesus paid the price for us. As Ephesians 1:7 states, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace” (ESV).
If you have not experienced the redemption found in Jesus Christ, we invite you to place your faith in Him, believing the good news of His life, death, burial, and resurrection. Through faith in Jesus Christ, you can be redeemed and forgiven. You no longer have to remain a slave to sin, condemned to eternal separation from God. Jesus paid the price to redeem you, resulting in freedom from slavery to sin and rescue from the eternal consequences of sin. To grow in the knowledge of God and His promises, you are encouraged to find a Bible-believing local church where you can worship Christ, study God’s Word, and pray with other believers. Jesus said, “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36, ESV).
Let the church say amen!
