Joy Matters

Life can be going well—not perfect, but with few challenges and with needs being met. Then something happens that could cause everything to fall apart. At that moment, joy matters because unlike happiness, joy is not dependent on circumstances. Joy is rooted in God's unchanging presence. God’s presence enables believers to respond to life's challenges with a deep, unshakable gladness and peace. Believers can rest in the assurance that God gives the strength to sustain them as they walk through the path of life. As believers walk, they will experience the “fullness of joy” found in God’s presence. You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore” (ESV) Psalm 16:11. Joy matters because it guides the believer's response, which is based not on life's challenges but on the strength God provides.

Nehemiah encouraged the Israelites not to respond with sorrow because of their past sins or hardships for the “joy of the Lord is their strength.”  Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions to anyone who has nothing ready, for this day is holy to our Lord. And do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (ESV) Nehemiah 8:10. These words from Nehemiah urge the people to recognize God’s faithfulness and restoration and respond with joy and gratitude. They are not to grieve but they are to have a posture of joy despite ample reasons to be sorrowful.

Joy is a fruit produced by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and a gift from God that believers are called to cultivate and live out each day. Even in seasons of sorrow, joy is available to believers because it comes from the everlasting God. Joy will enable believers to rest in confidence and assurance of who God is, what He is doing, and what He is able to do.  Psalm 30:5 says, “Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning (ESV). Even amid sorrow caused by loss, disappointment, or other misfortune, the joy of the Lord remains available to believers because God never leaves them. Rather than being a fleeting emotion, joy is the believer’s strength that is given by an everlasting God who is always present with them. Joy matters.

If you are reading this article and are a non-believer, we invite you today to believe in the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Repent of your sins and be converted so you can enjoy the joy of the Lord. The next step is to connect with a local body of believers where you can receive instructions on how to study, reflect, and pray so you can grow spiritually and  experience the joy that is given by an  everlasting God who is always present.

Let the church say amen!
