Hope
Hope is a desire with anticipation. To hope is to want something to happen or something to be true. Hope is more than a wish or a longing; it is a yearning belief that one day a desire will be a reality. Isaiah 40:11 says, “but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (NIV). There is a possibility and a likelihood in the future that those who hope in God will be renewed, will not be weary, nor will they faint. It might not be this very moment, but in the future it shall be so.
Hope shapes the response to the realities of the present. In Psalm 42:11, the psalmist asks two questions of the soul, “Why are you downcast?” and “Why so disturbed within me?” The psalmist proceeded to say, “Put your hope in God.” Although there are genuine reasons to be downcast and disturbed by present circumstances, facts remain facts; the soul should praise God because of the yearning belief of a future event to come. The actions of the present are influenced by anticipation of the future; hope anchors the soul in what is not yet seen but firmly believed.
Psalm 42 presents a vivid present-tense image of a deer desperately yearning for water to quench its thirst. Perhaps the deer was thirsty because a hunter pursued it. The deer knew the location of the brook and anticipated a cool drink upon arrival to the brook. Its yearning for the cool satisfaction of the brook gave it the strength and confidence to outrun its enemy. The expectation of refreshment drove the deer's endurance.
In the same way, Christians must run through seasons marked by troubles, struggles, and problems. They must press forward with a deep, sustaining hope, the expectation of God's provision and faithfulness. This forward movement is not based on present comfort, but on a confident belief in what God will do. Hope sustains believers, and it is the reason they remain steadfast, unmovable, and committed to the work set before them (1 Corinthians 15:58). What is longed for in faith and anticipated with confidence will, in time, be realized.
Let the Church Say Amen!
