Why Did Jesus Come?
Jesus said in John 14:6 that he is the only "way.” The “way” symbolizes that Jesus is the only path or route to heaven to live in the presence of God. God had a plan that mankind would always live in his presence – for mankind was created for God’s glory (Isaiah 43:7, Romans 11:36, Colossians 1:16, Revelations 4:11). After sin entered into the world (Genesis 3), there was a separation between God and mankind. Mankind was vanished from the presence of God into death and darkness. Isaiah 59:2 beautifully illustrates the effects of sin. “But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.” God’s remedy for this separation was to send his son, Jesus, to bring mankind back to himself (John 3:16).
The prophets speak of Jesus coming as redeemer (Genesis 3:15), suffering servant (Isaiah 53), and righteous king (Zechariah 9:9). The angel informed Joseph in Matthew 1:21 that the purpose of Jesus’s coming was to “save his people from their sins.” Jesus voiced his purpose in Luke 19:10 when he said, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” The truth of the matter is Jesus came to be the “way” back to God. Peter stated this truth in Acts 4:12 when he was defending his faith in Jesus. Peter said, “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” Through the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, man can turn around and walk back into the presence of God (Romans 5:1-2, 10-11; Ephesians 2:13, 18; Colossians 1:21-22).
Go ahead and teach Jesus came to bring prosperity because 3 John: 2 says, “Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prosper.” Go ahead and teach he came to bring long life because Proverb 10:27 says, “The fear of the Lord prolongeth days, but the years of the wicked shall be shortended.” Go ahead and teach Jesus came to bring happiness because Psalm 37:4 says, “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” In your teaching, do not forget to teach ,“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8). With the same love God created us to live in his presence is the same love that he created a “way” back to himself. Why did Jesus come? He came to bring mankind back into the presence of God. A life of death and darkness is no longer the only way for mankind. The work of Jesus as the redeemer, suffering servant, and righteous king has opened the only "way” that leads back into the presence of God where mankind can live forever.
Let the church say amen!
